Working with Mike Killeen in a fun, collaborative process, this Des Peres couple designed their dream home -- a single-story, prairie style house with horizontal lines, ample natural light, green features and modern touches. The 5400 ft² home includes a large clerestory skylight inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright's Robie House in Chicago. The skylight's exterior brick detail presented design challenges for the structural engineer, who designed steel i-beams to support the weight. The clerestory windows, tall ceilings, and transoms give the home a bright, airy feel. The main floor has a combined kitchen, living and dining area with built-in shelves and cabinets. A large custom fireplace and integrated entertainment system preside over the great room. The residence includes three bedrooms, two project rooms, and 3 garage spaces, including a Corvette bay. A wide open staircase leads to the finished basement used for entertaining. The house has two full- and two half-bathrooms, all with built-in sinks and wall-mounted European-style fixtures. The master bathroom includes a walk-in shower, his-and-her sinks, separate toilet room and custom make-up vanity.

The Owners, a young married couple with a small business, wanted a sustainable modern ‘Dwell House’ for their lot in South St. Louis.

The interior includes an open floor plan, ample natural light and tall ceilings with a loft feel. On the first floor, stairs, bath, laundry, closets, and utility are banked on one wall to allow the kitchen, dining and living room flowing together and be wide open. A bright breezeway connects to a 4-car garage.

The 2nd floor includes the master bedroom, a guest room and an open office which can later be converted to a child’s bedroom. The open feel is enhanced with white walls and light stain groove ¾” oak flooring was installed throughout.

The exterior, with veneer brick and metal panels, was designed to have the modern lines the owners desired yet tastefully contrast the neighboring 1920’s bungalows.

Sustainable design features include recyclable metal panels, bamboo floors, energy star appliances, high efficiency windows, recyclable materials for the deck and fences, minimizing waste during construction and most importantly location.

The city location eliminated the homeowners’ commute to work and other activities, diminishing their carbon footprint.

Interior improvements to the downtown Urban Tower and Restaurant, a fast-paced project with a very demanding schedule and technical coordination requirements, as the two building were connected and space was reconfigured on the first and second floors. Changes to the Tower included a new Steak House on the first floor, banquet space on the second floor and residential condominiums on floors 3 - 25. This project was phased to allow the hotel to continue functioning uninterrupted. In addition to design, 3D modeling, and document creation, Killeen Studio Architects also provided construction administration services for this project.

The Magic House's new 'Sid the Science Kid: The Super-Duper Exhibit!' designed by Killeen Studio Architects featuring hands-on, scientific fun for children!

New, 1950 SF home recently completed in Maplewood. Rebuilt after a disastrous fire, the home includes:
  • 3 Bedrooms
  • 2 1/2 Bathrooms
  • Art Studio in Basement

The owners wanted a Mediterranean Style house that would be large enough for their family and for entertaining. The home is over 7000 s.f. with a 3 car garage and full basement.

Two families planned to share one new house. We designed the house with ample space for communal dining and family space, and also provided private sleeping quarters for the 2 couples. The children were provided one large sleeping dorm in the basement. The views of the lake were exploited to the fullest. After being put on hold this project was reopened in 2012.

This is one of seven new custom single family homes -- each with a unique floor plan and face -- all unified within a common New England Cottage theme. The property is 3100 sq. ft. with a full basement.

We worked closely with the owner to develop a custom house for a site in Huntleigh. This was to be a very large home taking advantage of prominent views on the site. The owner in the end decided to purchase an existing home rather than build.
